Warning! Contains spoilers for Blue Lock episodes 1 and 2!Most Sports Anime vary wildly in specific details but generally boil down to the protagonist and their teammates winning matches through the typical Shonen power of friendship. However, one new anime, Blue Lock, is completely changing all that in a fascinating way. This makes it something that all Sports Anime fans should check out before this season ends.
The first episode of Blue Lock begins by featuring a high-stakes game of Soccer in its final moments. Yoichi is bringing the ball down the field preparing to score a goal but passes to his teammate instead, as it's what he's been trained to do. This act of teamwork ends up losing his team the game, as his teammate misses the shot in a great subversion of how teamwork usually helps Shonen protagonists accomplish their goals. Thus, when invited to a training program focused on creating Japan's next Soccer superstar that is led by a man who explicitly says that teamwork is what has prevented Japan from winning a World Cup, he jumps at the chance to be a part of it. To hammer home how different Blue Lock's approach to friendship and teamwork is, Yoichi even ends the episode by betraying a player he becomes chummy with, brutally hitting him in the face with a soccer ball.
Despite introducing more aspects of teamwork in episode 2, the show is still emphasizing how its games are every man for themselves. So it seems unlikely that the show will ever change its stance on teamwork. But given how delightfully refreshing the anime is, it doesn't need to. By brutally deconstructing one of the essential tropes of sports anime, Blue Lock easily carves out a place for itself as a must-watch show for any anime fan. 781b155fdc
